Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, is a chronic condition in which the force of blood against the artery walls is consistently too high. Over time, uncontrolled hypertension can lead to serious health problems such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney damage.

Symptoms of Diabetes

1. Primary (Essential) Hypertension

This develops gradually over many years and has no single identifiable cause. Factors that contribute include:

  • Family history of hypertension

  • Aging (more common in people over 40)

  • Sedentary lifestyle

  • High salt (sodium) intake

  • Being overweight or obese

  • Excessive alcohol consumption

  • Smoking

  • Stress and poor sleep

2. Secondary Hypertension

This type results from an underlying medical condition or medication and often appears suddenly. Common causes include:

  • Kidney disease

  • Thyroid problems

  • Adrenal gland disorders

  • Sleep apnea

  • Certain medications (like birth control pills, decongestants, or pain relievers)

  • Illegal drug use (such as cocaine or amphetamines)
